Psoriasis Society of Canada - How it all started!

HOW IT ALL STARTED
In 1983, Judy Misner went searching for a psoriasis support group to help her sister cope with psoriasis. Her sister suffered for 35 years with very little relief. To her dismay, she learned there were no psoriasis organizations in Canada. She discussed the possibility of forming a psoriasis group. After placing an ad in a local newspaper, she received 100 letters asking for information. She met with a few people and formed the first chapter in Canada - Halifax, Nova Scotia in June 1983.

After the first year, mail was being received from across Canada as people heard about the psoriasis organization. Judy then wrote Ottawa to form the first National Psoriasis Organization in Canada. Since that time there has been steady progress and growth:

	Publishes a National Psoriasis Newsletter 2 times a year
	Sponsored the first National Psoriasis Conference in Canada (1992)
	Hosted hundreds of psoriasis meetings across Canada Mailings to hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, nurses, libraries
	Hosted the first National Psoriasis Walk in the World - October 1996
	Represented Canada at the World Psoriasis Conference in California in 1991
	Initiated a Psoriasis Research Fund Numerous guest appearance on TV, radio, newspaper articles
	Formed psoriasis support groups across Canada

The National Office relies on memberships and donations to provide programs and services for those who have psoriasis. The Society does not pay any salaries. The Society is managed by dedicated volunteers who work long hours to provide information on psoriasis across Canada. We invite you to join our team.

24 Years and growing 1983-2007

JUDY MISNER, FOUNDER, PRESIDENT
Judy Misner, the Founder and President of the Psoriasis Society of Canada is now listed in the Who's Who of Canadian Women, starting with the 1998 edition. Ms. Misner was placed for her work with psoriasis projects for the past 18 years. Her name has also been selected for the International Book: Who's Who of Women Around the World.
In 1994, the Minister of National Health and Welfare announced that Judy Misner has been selected to receive a Canada Volunteer Award Certificate of Merit. This award is given each year in recognition of outstanding voluntary service in improving health and social well-being of Canadians.
